MORGAN SILVER DOLLARS
The Morgan Silver Dollar was ignored by the public for the most part until the 1960's. Since then, it has become one of the most popular U.S coins, due to its beauty and rich history.
The Morgan Silver Dollar is the only silver coin where circulation in the West was dominant.
Morgan Silver Dollars were minted in large quantities from 1878 through 1904, when a silver shortage ended production. Millions were melted down into silver bars for export purposes. In the 1960's and 1980's, when silver prices went sky high, still more were melted down. As a result, 15-17% of the Morgans survived, with an even smaller percentage of uncirculated Morgans remaining. Several mint marks, such as the Carson City, are ultra rare and highly collectible, as are several key dates, such as the 1893-S.
