$10 GOLD LIBERTY

The $10 Gold Liberty was one of the most popular and widely circulated coins in U.S. history. It was designed by Christian Gobrecht, and was minted from 1838 to 1907.

The design was altered many times. The first version from 1795-1797 displayed a capped bust of Liberty on the obverse and a small eagle on the reverse. The eagle was enlarged from 1797-1804. From 1838-1866, the design changed again, with Liberty sporting a bun and loose curls down her neck. On her head is a coronet with the word “Liberty” inscribed, and she's surrounded by thirteen stars, which represent the original 13 colonies. The reverse shows an eagle with its wings spread, perched on an olive branch.
